Importing device field data

If you want to update one or more device fields for multiple devices, you can import a file of device data and update all of the devices at the same time.

You can create your own CSV file of device data, or you can export a report from the Secure Endpoint Console, edit the data in the file, and then import the updated file. Before you export a report, ensure that you've included all custom field columns that you want to update.

If your file contains device fields that can't be edited by file import, or the data type is not supported by the associated custom field, the file import succeeds, but the invalid data is not imported. Any data that can't be imported shows on the file import confirmation message.

The file must meet the following requirements:

The Has Service Guarantee device field is not editable using the Import Data action. To update the field for one or more devices, use the Change License action to assign or remove a license that includes the Service Guarantee.

To import a CSV file of device data:

  1. Log in to the Secure Endpoint Console as a user with Assign permissions for Device Fields.
  2. On the navigation bar, click Settings > Custom fields > View and edit device fields.
  3. Click Import Data.
  4. Click Choose File, navigate to the location of the CSV file that you want to import, and select it. The file name of the selected file shows next to the Choose File button.

  5. Click Upload File. A Processing <#> data file notification shows near the top of the page.

    When processing is complete, the notification updates to Data file processed and a File Result report (<original file name>_FileResult_<date>_<time>.csv) is downloaded to your machine.

    Note that if the custom device fields of some devices failed to be updated, an Update error message shows instead of the Data file processed notification. The message shows the percentage of devices that were updated successfully.

  6. Proceed to the next section to verify the import.

To verify that the data in the file was imported successfully:

  1. Open the File Results report that was downloaded in step 5 in the previous section.

  2. Review the values in the Import Succeeded column. If any values are set to False:

    1. Review the details in the Failure Reason column to understand why the data for the device failed to be imported. For example, you can't import data for a device with a status of Disabled, Inactive, or Reported Stolen, nor can you import data if the device is not a member of your assigned device group (if applicable).
    2. To try to import your file again, edit the file to correct the failures and repeat steps 2 to 4 in the previous section.
