Changing the license assigned to devices

A license cannot be assigned or added to a device when the following conditions apply:

• Available licenses are insufficient

  This condition does not apply to license types that do not limit enrollment, such as site licenses and Enterprise License Agreements.

• The license is incompatible with the device's existing licenses

• The device is frozen, or it's been reported missing or stolen

  If the device's license has expired and the device is now unlicensed, this limitation does not apply.

• The operating system, make, or model of the device is incompatible with the selected license

If any of these conditions apply, a message notifies you that the action can't be completed as expected.

To manage licenses, your user role needs to be granted the Manage permission for Licenses. All default Administrator user roles are granted this permission.

To change the licenses assigned to devices:

1. Do one of the following:

   To change the license assigned to a single device

   On the Device Details page for the device, click > Change license. The Change Licenses dialog opens.

   To change the license assigned to multiple devices

   1. From the navigation bar, open a page or report that contains a list of devices in the results grid, such as the Devices page in License Management.
   2. Use the Search field or filters to find the devices you want to update.

   3. In the results grid, select each device you want to include in the request. To select all devices, select the Select All checkbox in the result grid header. To select consecutive devices, select the first device and then hold down the Shift key and select the last device. You can select up to 350,000 devices. To remove all selections, click Clear all.

      Change license requests are limited to 50,000 devices. If you select more, only the first 50,000 devices in the report will be processed. To change the license for the remaining devices, create additional requests.

   4. Depending on the page you're on, click Change license or > Change license. The Change Licenses dialog opens.

2. In the Change License dialog, choose one of the following options and complete the steps:

   Lenovo Security Assurance licenses are not listed in the Change License dialog because they are automatically assigned to eligible devices and are non-transferable.

   Assign licenses

   You can change the devices' base or add-on licenses, or add licenses to unlicensed devices.

   1. Click Assign licenses. The Assign licenses dialog opens to show the current license assignment for the selected devices.

   2. Under New Base licenses, select the checkbox next to a product with available licenses and click Next.

      License counts are not shown for license types that do not limit enrollment, such as site licenses and Enterprise License Agreements.

   3. [Optional] Under New Add-on licenses, select the checkbox next to a product, if one is available. Grayed out licenses are not available for selection for the reason provided.

   4. Click Save. A confirmation message is shown.

      If the license failed to be assigned to some devices for one of the reasons listed in Limitations, the confirmation message contains two links:

      • To re-attempt the action on these devices, click Try again.
      • To view the list of devices that failed to be updated, click View devices.

      If the license failed to be assigned to all devices for one of the reasons listed in Limitations, the confirmation message contains two links:

      • To re-attempt the action on all devices, click Try again.
      • To get assistance, click Absolute Technical Support.
   Add licenses

   You can add a license, such as an add-on license, to an existing base license.

   1. Click Add licenses. The Add Licenses dialog opens to show the current license assignment for the selected devices.

   2. Select the checkbox next to the license you want to add. Grayed out licenses are not available for selection for the reason provided.

      If the base license on an individual device is not compatible with the license you selected, a message shows and the license will not be added to this device. Similarly, if the license is already assigned to a device, a message shows and the license will not be added.

   3. To add the license to all supported devices, click Add.

   The license is added.

   Remove licenses

   You can remove a license, such as an add-on license.

   If only one base license is assigned to a device, you can't remove it because it will leave the device unlicensed. To remove all licenses from a device, unenroll it.

   1. Click Remove licenses. The Remove Licenses dialog opens to show the current license assignment for the selected devices.
   2. Select the checkbox next to each license you want to remove. Grayed out licenses are not available for selection for the reason provided.
   3. Click Remove.

   The license or licenses are removed from each selected device, as applicable. All features and functionality associated with this license are no longer available on these devices.

   A Device updated license event is logged to Event History for each updated device.
