Viewing and updating automatic license assignment
When devices are enrolled The process of adding a device to an account, which occurs automatically after the device's Secure Endpoint Agent makes its first connection to the Absolute Monitoring Center., they need to be assigned a product license to enable Absolute features and functionality to be available on the devices.
To simplify this process, the system automatically assigns licenses to the devices using a set of license assignment settings. You can view your account's settings and, if desired, update them to better suit the needs of your organization.
License assignment settings also apply to re-enrolled devices.

To manage licenses, your user role needs to be granted the Manage permission for Licenses. All default Administrator user roles are granted this permission.

To view your account's automatic license assignment settings:
- On the navigation bar, click
Settings > License management.
-
In the quick access toolbar, click
(License Assignment Settings). The License Assignment Settings dialog opens.
Your account's License enforcement status is shown. Possible statuses are:
- Enabled: applies to all standard license types that limit enrollment
- Disabled: applies to license types that do not limit enrollment, such as site licenses and Enterprise License Agreements
The License Assignment Settings dialog includes two sections:
Section
Details
This section defines how licenses are assigned to newly enrolled devices. By default, it shows the base products associated with your account and their current counts of In use and Available licenses.
License counts are not shown for license types that do not limit enrollment, such as site licenses and Enterprise License Agreements.
By default, the order in which licenses are assigned is based on either the feature capability of each product or the license start date, as follows:
-
If multiple base products were purchased at the same time, the most feature-rich product is listed first, meaning it is assigned first. If this product has no licenses available when a device is enrolled, the second most feature-rich base product is assigned, and so on.
In this case, the assignment order is Absolute Resilience → Absolute Control → Absolute Visibility.
- If multiple base products were activated at different times, the products are listed in descending chronological order by start date.
-
If no licenses are available for any base product, the devices are enrolled, but they are unlicensed.
To assign licenses to these devices, you'll need to purchase more licenses, or unenroll some devices that are ready to be retired.
If these default assignment settings do not fully meet your needs, you can:
- Change the assignment order
- Add automatic assignment of add-on products
- Create custom assignments based on device attributes
When an assigned license expires
This section is not available for license types that do not limit enrollment, such as site licenses and Enterprise License Agreements.
This section defines what will happen when a device's base or add-on license expires.
The following guidelines are applied:
- If a purchase order for an equivalent base or add-on product exists, the equivalent license is automatically assigned to the device.
- If no purchase order for an equivalent add-on product exists, the add-on license is removed, but the device remains licensed by the remaining licenses. All features and functionality associated with the add-on product are no longer available on the device.
-
If no purchase order for an equivalent base product exists, the base license is removed and the device is now unlicensed. If any add-on licenses were assigned to the device, they are also removed, even if the add-on licenses have not expired.
Note that if any of the following conditions apply, the device does not become unlicensed until the condition is removed:
- The device is frozen by a Freeze request or an Offline Freeze rule
- The device has been reported missing or stolen in the console
If you have purchased Lenovo devices through the Lenovo Security Assurance (LSA) program, license assignment limitations apply. Learn more

Update the default setting for purchase order assignment
This setting is not available for license types that do not limit enrollment, such as site licenses and Enterprise License Agreements.
[Optional] By default, the purchase order with the expiration date that extends furthest into the future is always assigned first. If you want to change this setting, click

Automatically assign licenses based on device attributes
If you want to assign licenses based on device attributes, such as platform type, make, model, or device name, create a custom assignment.
Example You purchased 1000 Absolute Resilience licenses and 100 Absolute Resilience for Chromebooks licenses. To ensure that the Absolute Resilience for Chromebooks licenses are only assigned to Chromebooks, you create a custom assignment based on the platform type, Chromebook. Your custom setting is added to the top of the product list, followed by the default settings. When a custom assignment exists, newly enrolled devices may temporarily show in the console as unlicensed. This occurs because although their agent status is set to Active, only limited device information is available. Once the device connects to the Absolute Monitoring Center and a complete payload of device information is uploaded, a license is automatically assigned to the device.
- Click
> Create Custom Assignment.
- Under Assignment, click the field and select a base product.
- If applicable, click AND and select an add-on product.
-
Under Limit to these devices, click the field and select one of the following device attributes to base the assignment on:
