Troubleshooting rules

If you are not getting the expected results from a rule, or if you are getting an error, DataExplorer Builder has several tools to help.

Normally, when you evaluate a rule, you only see the result and timing information in the Output window. If you turn on verbose logging, DataExplorer Builder shows the results of each interim function as it's evaluated. This allows you to see the inputs for each block and the output of each block.

Evaluate a rule with debugging enabled:

  1. Go to Rule, and then select Enable Verbose Output.
  2. Evaluate the rule or evaluate the blocks you want to debug.

DataExplorer Builder evaluates the selected blocks. Review the information in the output to see how each function is evaluated, and to see the final result.

Debugging starts rule evaluation but stops at each block so that you can look in Output to see what is happening while each block is being evaluated.

To use debugging:

  1. Go to Rule, and then select Debug.

    Rule evaluation starts but pauses at each block. The block being evaluated is highlighted.

  2. Do one of the following:
    • To evaluate the following block, go to Rule, and then select Step Into.
    • To skip of the current block and start pre-evaluation of the following block, go to Rule, and then select Step Over.
    • To complete the evaluation and show the final result, go to Rule, and then select Continue.

If you are working with support to troubleshoot an issue, they may ask you for information about DataExplorer Builder.

To get information about DataExplorer Builder:

  • Go to Help, and then select About.

The About Absolute DataExplorer Builder window opens and displays the version, the copyright, and loaded plugins. Provide any of these details to Absolute Technical Support, if requested.
