Adding and managing dashboard widgets

You can create your own dashboard widgets and add them to a predefined dashboard or a dashboard that you've created. You can then edit, duplicate, or remove the widgets. You can also change their position on a dashboard.

Note that although you can display an unlimited number of widgets, the dashboard may take longer to load with more than 20 widgets.

To add widgets, your user role needs to be granted the View permission for Dashboard - Inventory. All default user roles are granted this permission.

Depending on the widget data you want to show, additional permissions may be required. For example, if your user role is not granted the View permission required to use a data source, field, metric, or filter, the item is grayed out and the following message shows in a tooltip when you hover over the item:

When you add a new widget, you need to specify:

  • A chart type
  • A data source
  • One or more device attributes to report on
  • A metric

To add a widget to a dashboard:

  1. Click Dashboard on the navigation bar and click the dashboard that you want to add the widget to. If you want to add it to a new dashboard. create the dashboard first.
  2. On the dashboard's quick access toolbar, click Add widget.
  3. Click the widget title and edit its name.
  4. Click the description and edit the text.

  5. In the settings panel under Chart type, select a chart.

    Description

    Creates a chart with horizontal bars

    Field is on the Y axis and Metric is on the X axis. The maximum number of bars is 20.

    Creates a chart with vertical bars (columns)

    Field is on the X axis and Metric is on the Y axis. The maximum number of bars is 20.

    Creates a donut chart

    Field is represented by slices of the donut. Metric shows when you hover over a slice. The maximum number of slices is 20.

    Creates a line chart

    Field is represented by lines on the chart. Units are on the Y axis and time is on the X axis. The maximum number of lines is 10.
  6. Under Data source, select an option.

    To show data in the widget, the Device Usage policy needs to be activated in at least one policy group.

    Show the breakdown of devices by a particular device attribute, such as its location, encryption status, or IP address, during a period of time

    Click Fields to see all available attributes.

    Application usage

    (applies to Windows and Mac devices only)

    Show the average (or total) usage of your devices' applications over a period of time, expressed in minutes or hours

    Click Fields to see all available attributes.

    Prerequisite

    To show data in the widget, the Installed Applications policy needs to be activated in at least one policy group. The policy's Include Usage data option also needs to be selected.

    Click Fields to see all available attributes.

    To show data in the widget, the Installed Applications policy needs to be activated in at least one policy group.

    Web usage

    (applies to Windows and Chromebook devices only)

    Show the average (or total) web usage of your devices over a period of time, expressed in minutes or hours

    Click Fields to see all available attributes.

    Prerequisite

    To show data in the widget, the Web Usage policy needs to be activated in at least one policy group.

  7. Under Fields, click the field and select a data point to report on. The data points that are available depend on the data source. The selected data point will show as bars (or slices) in your chart.

    Depending on the policies activated in your policy groups, some fields may not be applicable. For example, if the Full Disk Encryption Status policy isn't activated, do not select Encryption status. Similarly, if the Geolocation Tracking policy isn't activated, do not select a location field, such as City or Country.

  8. Under Limit number of bars/slices/lines, click the field and enter the maximum number of bars, slices, or lines to show in the chart. The default maximum number of bars or slices is 20, and lines is 10.
  9. [Optional] If you selected a bar chart in step d, the Group fields by (optional) field shows. This field allows you to add a second attribute to create a grouped bar chart.

    To create a grouped bar chart:

    1. Click the field and select a second attribute.

      For example, you may want to group the results based on device group or geographical location. Or you may want to breakdown a category into subcategories (for example, web categories into websites).

      Depending on the policies activated in your policy groups, some fields may not be applicable. For example, if the Full Disk Encryption Status policy isn't activated, do not select Encryption status. Similarly, if the Geolocation Tracking policy isn't activated, do not select a location field, such as City or Country.

    2. Under Limit number of groupings, click the field and enter the maximum number of groups to show within each bar. The maximum number is 5.
  10. For the Devices and Applications data sources, all remaining data is aggregated in an Others bar by default. Note the following about Others:
    • It is included in the count you specify in the Limit number of bars field.
    • It applies to bar and donut charts only.
    • For donut charts, the Others slice is always shown, so the Group remaining values as 'Others' setting is enabled and not editable.
    • It is not included when you change the sort order of a bar chart. The Others bar is always shown last.

    To exclude the Others bar from the chart, clear the checkbox next to Group remaining values as 'Others'.

    For the Device usage, Application usage, and Web usage data sources, Others is excluded by default. To include it, select the checkbox next to Group remaining values as 'Others'.

  11. Under Metric:

    1. Click the field and select an item to report on. For some data sources, this field contains only one option. Metric shows on the axis opposite the selected Field.

    2. [Optional] Click and add a filter to the metric.

      Note that the filter's Enter Value field must contain an integer. For example, to show device counts between 10 and 50, add the following filter: Device between 10 and 50. Alternatively, to show device usage less than 90 minutes, add the following filter: Time in use (minutes) less than 90.

    3. Under Aggregation, select how you want the metric to be calculated. See Metrics and aggregations.

      If the field shows both Count and Unique count, Count is the total number of installations, while Unique count is the number of devices the application is detected on.

  12. To further customize the widget and its data, use the quick controls:

  13. Review the data shown in the chart preview. If you're satisfied, click Add to dashboard.

You want to create a widget that shows the five Microsoft applications that your users have used least often over the last 60 days. You also want the data to be grouped by device group, but you want to exclude two device groups from the results.

  1. Click Add widget .
  2. Change the widget title to Microsoft apps not used.
  3. Change the widget description to Least used Microsoft apps over 60 days.
  4. Under Data source, select Application usage. Note that the selected data source defines the data points that are available in the Fields field.
  5. Select a chart type. For example, select the horizontal bar chart .
  6. Configure how you want the data to show in the chart:
    1. Under Fields, select Application name.
    2. Specify how many applications you want to show in the widget. Click the field under Limit number of bars and enter 5.
    3. Select how to break down the results and how many items to include in each group. Under Group fields by, select Device group, and then click the field under Limit number of bars and enter 4. Up to four device groups with the least usage will show for each application.
    4. Leave the checkbox next to Group remaining values as 'Others' cleared.
    5. Leave the Metric and Aggregation fields set to their default value. The chart will show the average number of minutes that each application was in use per day.
    6. You decide that you want to exclude applications that haven't averaged more than 10 minutes of usage. Click , add the filter Time in focus (minutes) greater than 10, and click Apply.
  7. To limit the widget to Microsoft applications only, click and add the following filter: Application publisher is Microsoft.
  8. You want to exclude two device groups from the result. Click and add the following filter: Device group is not Group D or Group F.
  9. Click the time range quick control and select Last 60 days. The applications with the least usage over the last 60 days now show in the chart.
  10. To show the applications with the least usage, click to change the sort order.
  11. Click Add to dashboard.

The widget is added to the bottom of the Dashboard. You can move the widget to your desired location.

After a widget is added to the Dashboard, you can edit its settings at any time.

To edit a widget's settings:

  1. In the widget that you want to edit, click > Settings to open it in edit mode. The widget's settings panel shows on the right.
  2. Do one or more of the following:
  3. To remove all of your changes, click Discard changes.
  4. When you're done, do one of the following:
    • To save your changes to the existing widget, click Save. The widget is updated.
    • To leave the existing widget as is and save your changes to a new widget, click Save a copy. A new widget is added to the dashboard. The widget title is set to "Copy of <original widget title>".

You can reposition a widget by clicking it and dragging it to the desired location on the dashboard. The other widgets automatically adjust their position to accommodate the moved widget.

In the current release, you can't move widgets between dashboards.

You can duplicate a widget and then edit its settings to create a new widget.

In the current release, you can't duplicate a widget in one dashboard and add it to another dashboard.

To duplicate a widget:

  1. In the widget that you want to duplicate , click > Duplicate widget. The Settings dialog opens to show the settings of the duplicated widget. The widget title is set to "Copy of <original widget title>".
  2. Edit the widget title and description.
  3. Edit the settings, as required.
  4. Click Save.

The widget is added to the bottom of the Dashboard. You can move the widget to your desired location.

You can remove one widget at a time from the Dashboard.

To remove a widget from the Dashboard:

  1. In the widget that you want to remove, click > Remove Widget. The Remove a widget dialog opens.
  2. Click Remove.

The widget that you removed no longer shows on the Dashboard.
